How do I book?

Please contact the education centre on 01727 890212 or 01727 836223 to discuss your choice of trails and/or workshops and available dates.  Then download the booking form and return it, either by post to St Albans Cathedral Education Centre, Sumpter Yard, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 1BY or by fax to 01727 836223.    Alternatively complete the online form and email it to eduction@stalbanscathedral.org.uk.

How far ahead should I book?

It is wise to book at least a term in advance, especially if you have a particular date in mind. If for some reason you can’t plan so far ahead, do give us a ring and try!

A Mediaeval Pilgrim Lights a CandleWhere can we eat lunch?

The grassy hillside to the south of the Cathedral is ideal for picnics. However, subject to availability, you may also book a room in which to eat packed lunches.

How much does it cost?

The cost is £3.90 per activity per child. There is no charge for accompanying adults. The lunch room costs an additional £10.00 for groups of up to 50 children and £15.00 for groups of more than 50. This is payable whether or not the room is used on the day. Please be advised that any confirmed booking cancelled within 6 weeks of the date of your visit will incur a cancellation fee of 50% of the total booking fee. Prices for our educational materials and preliminary visits are listed separately.

Souvenir bags containing a variety of gifts including pens, pencils, rubbers, badges etc are available from the Cathedral Shop at £2.00. Please phone 01727 890217 in advance of your visit. Stained Glass WorkshopWhere do we park?

Coach parking is permitted at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre at the bottom of Holywell Hill at £10.00 per coach. It is a twenty minute walk through the park to the Cathedral. It is, however, quite possible for coaches to drop off near the top of Holywell Hill at the entrance to the Cathedral grounds (see map).

Where do we come on arrival?

Follow the signs around the outside of the Cathedral and come to the Education Centre in the north churchyard. Please avoid walking through the Cathedral to get to us.

Do we need to bring anything with us?

In short, the answer is "no!". Clipboards etc. are not needed. Photography is permitted in the Cathedral but please check with Education Centre group leaders before taking photographs or video footage of activities.

What is expected of the teachers?

Teachers should stay with their group and experience the trails and workshops alongside their pupils. They will not necessarily be expected to give any input to these sessions, though extra pairs of hands during practical sessions are often useful, especially with younger children. Members of the Education Centre team will usually want to assume responsibility for discipline though there are occasions from time to time when it is helpful to have teacher back-up. At all other times during the visit, teachers will, of course, be responsible for the control and supervision of their group.

Unguided groups

If you decide not to use the Education Centre Team but prefer to work with your children yourself, please still make a formal booking. By negotiating a date and booking it through our office you are ensured that the building will be free of major events. We will also alert you to any last minute additions to the Cathedral timetable (funerals, for instance).

The £1.00 per pupil booking fee means that your visit is confirmed on the Cathedral Diary and we can look forward to welcoming you.
