The Trust was founded in 1978 as a charity (registered number 1037405) to raise money for the restoration and renewal of the fabric of the Cathedral, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. In its 18 years the Trust has raised funds to restore the nave of the Cathedral; to build a new Chapter House alongside the Cathedral; and to restore the historic Shrine of St Alban. It now needs to find the money to restore the east end of the Cathedral church and the medieval wall paintings and painted vaults and ceilings inside the Cathedral. The Trust aims to raise, at current prices, up to £100,000 each year over the next decade.
Particular projects are:
- to spend some £120,000 during the next six years on the wonderful 13th century wall-paintings;
- to restore the medieval painted wooden ceiling above the High Altar at a cost of £240,000;
- to repair the external roofs at the east end of the Cathedral at a cost of £300,000, along with £150,000 on the roofs of the north and south transepts;
- in addition £750,000 needs to be spent on reordering the bell tower.
These are no small sums, but the Trustees believe strongly that the expenditure is worthwhile in order to preserve one of Englands great cathedral buildings - as a place of worship; as a place of pilgrimage; as an important part of the countrys Christian heritage.
